BioPoly Granted New U.S. Patent Protecting Shoulder Implant for Chronic Instability

Press Release

Posted by: BioPoly November 6, 2025

FORT WAYNE, IN – BioPoly LLC continues to bolster its intellectual property portfolio with the addition of a U.S. patent covering an innovative shoulder implant designed to treat Bankart lesions, a leading cause of chronic shoulder instability and recurrent dislocations. This new addition highlights the company’s expanding focus on advanced solutions for joint preservation and stability using its proprietary synthetic cartilage material called BioPoly® – a patented combination of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and hyaluronic acid.

Unlike traditional procedures that address Bankart lesions with transfer of tissue from one location to another (i.e. Laterjet procedure), BioPoly’s patented design reinforces the damaged labral region with a smooth, cartilage friendly articulating surface that has been engineered from the BioPoly material. The end result is a robust, low-friction interface that stabilizes the shoulder joint while protecting the surrounding cartilage from further wear and tear.

“Our goal is always to address real clinical problems where current options fall short,” said Dr. Herb Schwartz, President of BioPoly LLC. “This technology is being developed to help surgeons restore shoulder stability for patients who experience recurrent dislocations.”

This newly issued Bankart-related patent builds upon BioPoly’s previously granted Hill-Sachs implant patent, thus addressing both glenoid and humeral sides of shoulder preservation technologies. Together, these innovations provide orthopedic surgeons with complementary solutions for comprehensively and wholly managing shoulder instability.

Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and certified to ISO 13485, BioPoly LLC continues to advance orthopedic implant innovation by combining its proven biomaterial (BioPoly®) with designs that preserve and restore the body’s natural mechanics.
